Description
Approach by Car: Drive along the B3269 until you reach the boarder between north yorkshire/ Cumbria boarder. Turn off the road and drive along the track until you reach the gates and the train line, Park here. Ensure you park considerately, not blocking access and leaving room for others to park. Approach by foot: pass through the gates and over the bridge, follow the farm road over the river bridge, past the farm buildings then crossing over the stone wall using the steps provided. Keep following the footpath on the TR until you get to the old stone bridge where you cross back to the TL, follow this track until you reach the river. Canyon entry: Enter the canyon where the forestry block ends, it is also the start of the gorge, above is a flat river. Canyon descent: A scenic non technical descent with small falls throughout including one small jump into a deep pool. The gorge is divided into three sections, the middle is the deepest and the end is regarded as the most scenic. Experience is required to safely negotiate the obstacles this canyon has to offer. Exit: Eventually the canyon will begin to open out and exit is possible at the farm building you passed through on your approach. Escapes: Escape is not possible, if you need to get out you will need to continue down or back out the way you have come (requires skill)

Canyon Experience :

16/05/24: Magnificent little gorge. Beautifully shaped and nice colors in a creek you would not expect to find a litlle gem like this.

No technical aspects / no rope needed. There is a fixed line to cross (monkey style or harness needed) the only possible jump/downclimb. It’s easy to downclimb as well, but then you have to get wet above the waist. All other parts you only need to get wet up to your waist.

Easy access/exit. Parking for at least 3 vehicles when parked smart.

What a fantastic little place this is! Minimal effort and great fun. Ok it’s a little limited in features, no abseils and so forth but the scenery and the nature of this gill makes up for that. I could happily descend this gorge several times in one day. A fantastic jump part way down is the highlight feature.

Water levels drop quite quickly after rainfall so conditions are usually fairly predictable.

Access is easy, parking a little limited.

We did Hell Gill and Strans Gill as a little day trip. Great day out!
