Notes
Very remote adventure canyon. ~8 pitches. Largely escapable between shorter encased sections. Isle of Rum is a nature reserve, leave no trace. FKD ghosted. Possible to leave anchors in place as long as you return to remove them after descent. Final abseil very hard to rig, aquatic, ending in the sea. Check tide times and swell for swimming out the gorge. Multi-day trip only due to ferry timings - check weather before going as ferries are regularly cancelled and there’s only one small shop on the island. There’s a small bunkhouse in Kinloch too. Topo from FKD left in Dibidil bothy book for next group. As seen in Find Mòr film. cross over the canyon on this trail. If staying in Dibidil bothy, note the Dibidil river can be hard/impossible to cross in spate. Take your own fuel for the fireplace.
Description
Parking: Vehicles can be left overnight for free for a few days. Ferry info on CalMac - Small isles routes. Pay attention to ferry sailings as timings change from high to low season. Approach: Accessed by ferry from Mallaig to Kinloch, Rum. Foot passenger only (~£6pp each way). From ferry terminal on Rum, follow the road toward Kinloch, turning off left before the village. Follow the trail skirting the south coast of the island toward Dibidil bothy. You cross over the canyon on this trail. If staying in Dibidil bothy, note the Dibidil river can be hard/impossible to cross in spate. Take your own fuel for the fireplace. Hike ~100m uphill from the trail on river right and enter at the Slainte Squeeze (abseil through small hole) Exit: Follow to the sea, regular escapes possible. At low tide you can walk most of the way out the gorge after the final abseil but at high tide or with swell this could be a very tricky swim. Exit the gorge and swim toward river right until you find a short section of rock to climb up
