Tampered Anchors - Summer 2020
This canyon had almost all anchors partially removed, the reasons for the removal are still unknown as the responsible party has not yet come forward, unfortunately the quality of removal was poor, resulting in the remains of bolts sticking out of the rock. Since this event, the canyon has now been reopened.
Notes
To prevent future issues at Dungeon, please act with discretion and positively represent the canyoning community. This is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Stay in the water, avoid climbing on the banks to the side of the gorge. Can be run by competent groups in higher levels. New anchors placed in July 2023.
Description
Approach by Car: Park in the car park between Stickle and Dungeon Ghyll Approach by foot: Follow the footpath towards Harrison Stickle. When you pass 600m of elevation keep an eye out for a path on the left that crosses the Ghyll, when you see it turn left and get in here. Canyon descent: Lots of drops with shallow pools, a great mix of anchors to test your rigging skills. Exit: Features will run out and turn more into a gorge walk, when you see the floodgates over the river exit on the TL. Escapes: Escapes are possible however usually tricky except for the middle and lower sections that have been marked on the Topo. First Decent: (Unknown)

Canyon Experience :

Descended just the top few pitches 30/3/25. First one descended off two good quality bolts, rigged an abseil on a couple of others and removed some degraded tat from one. Water level fairly low.

Canyon Experience :

Descended on 22/02/25. Water levels moderate, heavy rain in preceding days but water levels very manageable. In (@620m ASL) 1h15m, down 3h30m, out 10m. Adventurous feeling canyon with impressive situations and some great pitches.

A lot of evidence of bolt chopping in the canyon, as noted in description quality of removal was very poor with some bolts bent & hammered over making it look like a complete mess. Some bolts have been removed further since last topo update (July 2023). Some abseils are now off piles of rotting tat, rusty maillons and rusty carabiners, unsure how this is now less of an eyesore than a couple of subtly placed bolts! In addition, in the middle section some bolts have been removed forcing you to walk around shorter pitches onto the gorge sides where it’s more likely that rare plants will get damaged.

Ghosting equipment necessary in some parts, also would recommend bringing enough tat to rig a few abseils. One of the drilled threads in the lower section wouldn’t fit furry 10mm rope so bring something thinner.
